Caster Semenya, the South African athlete whose masculine looks and
mannerisms caused a stir back in 2009 is set to wed.
The Olympic silver
medallist has set in motion events that will see her marry herself a wife.
According to the Daily Sun, Semenya sent her
family to negotiate Lobola (brideprice) for fellow athlete Violet Raseboya with
the family reportedly paying R25, 000 (approximately Ksh 210,000) as a first
step towards their wedding.
The website quotes a close friend of the
couple who confirms that the couple have been inseparable in recent
months.
Her appearance at the women's 800 metres final during the world
athletics championships at the Olympic stadium in Berlin, August 19, 2009 where
she won the gold medal kicked up a storm forcing her to submit a test to
ascertain her gender.
While most of the controversy surrounding Semenya
stems from questions around her gender, she has not come out to declare her
sexuality in a country where lesbians are sometimes subjected to rape in a bid
to ‘sexually reorient’ them.
South Africans have been fiercely protective
of the golden girl with magazines giving her makeovers to present her as more
feminine.
On the track, pundits have accused Semenya of deliberately
throwing the race and coming in second for the silver at the 2012 Olympics to
avoid more controversy surrounding her gender
