Context
Globally, road traffic injuries (RTI) kill over 1.2 million people every year, and RTI is forecast to be the world's fifth largest killer by 2030. Sub-Saharan Africa has the world's most dangerous roads, and rates of RTI are increasing as roads are built and vehicles are imported into the continent.
Amend develops, implements, evaluates, and brings to scale public health programs to prevent RTI in Africa. Our work includes: development of localized infrastructure to increase pedestrian safety, road safety lessons in primary schools, the development of road safety media campaigns, advocacy to support vulnerable road users, scientific research into the causes and effects of road traffic injury, and more. All of our program work is continually evaluated for efficacy and impact. The World Health Organization has said that "the interventions promoted by Amend.org are perfectly in line" with those being promoted by the WHO.
