Part-time (0.44 FTE)
Grade: 6
The School of Biological Sciences at Bangor University invites applications for a Part-time Graduate Teaching Assistantship/PhD Scholarship in Tropical Zoology. We are a dynamic and growing school: in the last 2 years, we have appointed nine mainly research-led academic staff and three teaching assistants, increased our undergraduate intake, introduced new undergraduate and Masters programmes, as well as several field courses. Bangor University currently features in the top 20 UK HEIs in terms of quality of student experience.
We are seeking to appoint a Graduate Teaching Assistant to help develop fieldwork in Tropical Zoology and other teaching activities. We are now developing a field study site in the Mbeya district of southern Tanzania, in collaboration with Operation Wallacea and the Tanzanian Fisheries Research Institute. This work is being carried out in conjunction with a major research programme studying the genetics, behaviour and ecology of adaptive speciation in cichlid fishes, in collaboration with colleagues at Bristol and Cambridge Universities, and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. The successful applicant will be expected to register for a part-time PhD in this field and to register for a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education (PGCTHE).
Candidates should a good first degree in biology, zoology, genetics or a related topic (minimum 2:1), experience of teaching and outstanding interpersonal skills. An interest in teaching and student welfare is essential.
The successful candidate will be expected to start 1st September 2014 and the post is available for a period of 5 years.
